Eos Wireless iPod Audio System Review

While multiple room audio setups are far from new, true plug and play wireless systems have yet to be a force to be reckon with. Eos Wireless has given it a shot with an incredibly easy to use wireless speaker system and the results are good, but less than stellar.

To explain it simply, the Eos Wireless System has one main dock that controls all of the wireless speakers. From the dock you can use you iPod or any other external audio source through the dock’s auxiliary input. The dock requires power as does the wireless speakers so your scenario will have to include power in order to run everything “wirelessly”. Each dock is capable of transmitting to up to 4 wireless speakers and is displayed brightly by a blue LED on the dock. The tiny infrared remote is bare bones as far as functions but its response was accurate and prompt.

Set up is so easy you don’t even have to flip through the instructions. Once the dock is powered it will automatically find however many wireless speakers you have plugged in and immediately begin broadcasting. Each wireless speaker can be plugged directly into a wall outlet or the AC plug can be detached allowing for more custom placement. The contact points are really big and rugged and have no problem supporting the weight of the speaker when directly in the wall. The wireless speakers also have a really nice feeling volume knob that lets you know with a good click that the speaker has been turned on or off.

Each speaker has left and right tweeters on the front and a small midrangish speaker on the backside. The range for each wireless speaker is 150 feet indoors and 300 feet outdoors. I live in a large 2 bedroom house and I had no problems transmitting music from the far reaches of my basement to the fence in my backyard. Also of note is that if you have more than one dock you can match each speaker to whichever specific dock you want via the link button on the back of the dock. Mac users with iPhones or Touches can use the Aux in to control music through their computer from around the house. I tried it and it worked flawlessly.

Ok, on to how they sound. Let me preface this section by saying that I have a degree in audio engineering (though I don’t really use it) and have a very sensitive ear when it comes to discerning tone and frequency response. While the dock speakers and the wireless ones sound fair at low volumes, they suffer greatly when cranked. The SRS WOW and GigaWare patented technologies don’t really come into play at all and make no difference in the overall sound. I have read some reviews saying that these speakers can’t go loud but they can, they just don’t sound good. I tested them mainly with Hip Hop and Metal and while those genres have more commanding tones, the speakers just couldn’t handle it. Shrill distortion are the two best words I can use to describe it. Even the dock’s speakers didn’t sound all that good in my opinion.

Obviously the spectrum of consumers that would be interested in this product greatly varies, but these are not for audiophiles or people who throw parties and need loud and defined music. I do think this speaker system has a place in the market though for sure. From nursing homes to day care centers this system is so easy to use the sound quality isn’t as important and honestly I think most people would enjoy them.

Beyond the sound there aren’t many gripes. The fact that the dock has no on/off button is annoying especially if you are energy conscious. The base station dock is actually priced pretty decent right now on Amazon and comes with one wireless speaker. Each additional speaker is a bit pricey, though. Other than the scenarios I described above, I think this system would be great for the tech stunted over 50 crowd as the plug and play setup will be invaluable to some, like my Dad. In the end, Eos Wireless has made some great strides into this new frontier, they just aren’t there yet. If they can get a handle on some better sound quality they will have a killer product. Until then…

It’s not that unusual to get a press release announcing a product that takes on a problem, but taking on Apple, that takes serious cahonays. One thing is for, the Sonix7 Media Pro is cheap considering what you get, but their website is riddled with customer testimonials, which sound as canned as tuna.

Nonetheless, the device features a 3.2-inch (320×240) touchscreen, 20 hour battery life for video and 30 for music, support for SFC and NES game formats, picture viewer, accelerometer and a camera with an unspecified amount of pixels. Unfortunately, they didn’t get the memo and stuffed a 2.5mm jack into the thing. Oh, and better yet, it’s not Mac compatible. Seriously, if you’re gonna take on Apple at least have the decency to put in a universal headphone jack. The Sonix7 Media Pro is available in 8GB and 16GB capacities for £89.99 ($137) and £104.99 ($160), respectively.

PowerMonkey Explorer W/ Solar Slave Review

Solar charging is all the rage right now. Soon enough all of our gadgets will have solar panels on them. Until then, there is the PowerMonkey Explorer w/ Solar Slave.

The Explorer can be charged three different ways: Solar, wall plug, or through a USB connection. The whole package comes with a ton of stuff. Besides the Explorer and the Solar Slave, it comes with: 4 different international wall plug adapters, 10 device adapters, 2 carrying cases, and a velcro loop for hanging the Solar Slave. You can also order more device adapters online if you need a certain one.

As I mentioned in my Solio Magnesium review, solar charging doesn’t happen overnight, literally. Though the Solar Slave accepts partial light sources, it takes its sweet time. Obviously being in a sun soaked location will help speed things along, but the wall plug and USB charging methods will be much more faster and reliable.

While all these solar chargers are designed with the outdoor enthusiast in mind, it’s always nice to have some “Apocalypse Gear” around just in case. What I really liked about the Explorer and the Solar Slave is that it can draw power from fire as well as heat lamps and dishes.

What it’s going to come down to, is that this type of device is going to save your ass in a pinch. While it’s slow to fully charge, it will provide the means to make an emergency call or listen to that last 50 Cent song before you head into the club. Not that the latter would ever happen.

Operation and handling was a bit confusing. First off, holding the Explorer and the Solar Slave together felt like dragging around a mini IV stand and drip bag. A little awkward, but the connection holding them together was tighter than it looked.

What I found most weird about the Explorer was that the bright blue illuminated LCD display has two different power bars that denoted charge. The one on the left has 4 bars and the one on the right has 7 that go from small to big. The instruction manual doesn’t make it clear what the difference is at all. Battery capacity and level of charge? Isn’t that the same thing? Does it matter? I’m confusing myself even more just trying to write about it!

The charging process is also not automatic. Once your device is plugged in you then have to activate the Explorer. A fully charged Explorer gave my iPhone just over two full charges but I did notice that sometimes it was less or I couldn’t tell due to the weirdness of the display design.

In addition, I couldn’t charge my iPhone while the Solar Slave was plugged in (see gallery pic). Why? Annoying. Also the Solar Slave did not directly charge my phone (see gallery pic). The USB charging method works with low powered USB ports and takes a couple hours to fully charge, as does wall charging. Also, you can’t tell how far along a charge is with out unplugging the Explorer.

I also question the durability of the Explorer and the Solar Slave’s dangly bits as they both have exposed cords that will see some wear and tear in a bag or just thrown somewhere. The Explorer and Solar Slave themselves are of solid construction and have a dry matte blue plastic finish. The Explorer is also water resistant when all sealed up with nothing attached.

In conclusion, the PowerMonkey Explorer and Solar Slave will do what they are supposed to do when you need them to, and will surely be an asset to any world traveler or those away from electricity. Aside from some odd design choices, the Explorer and Solar Slave is a complete charging package that will just take some getting used to.
